Note to ParentsYour child will be completing a speech class in high school. Students often have reservations about public speaking, but it is important that our youth learn how to speak in front of other individuals, even if those other individuals may be on the other side of a computer. Through this class, your child will work on this important life skill.
Your student should finish the actual speeches a few days before the speeches are due. Why? Practicing speeches takes time and the content of the speeches should be decided before final rehearsals. Encourage your child to practice with you, other family members, or friends. Practice will allow the planning of tone and inflection, and work out common speaking errors. Public speaking is a lifelong skill. Many students are fearful of speaking in front of classmates. Together, with practice and confidence boosts, we can develop your student’s oratory skills. In addition to writing and giving speeches, your child will be participating in a speaking contest. This can be through oral interp or through a speech and debate competition. This is part of their speech grade. While students may decide to participate in more than one contest, only one is required. |
