We will cover the following novels this school year:
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Giver by L. Lowry
Each novel is paired with classroom activities, language studies, curriculum short stories and poetry, and nonfiction pieces.
The students will also be completing a Holocaust Unit and a Civil War Unit in which they will have individually chosen books. If parents wish to see a list of book options for their children, please contact me and I will give you a listing of their choices.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
Students will be required to read three AR books per quarter. They need one fiction, one nonfiction, and the third can be their choice (fiction/nonfiction). They also must have a minimum of 20 AR points each quarter. The three books and the AR points will count as four test grades each quarter. A breakdown of AR points to grade is listed below.
20 points = 100%
19 points = 95%
18 points = 90%
17 points = 85%

Students will use Newsela to read and study nonfiction news articles. Each student is assigned stories in reading class and is required to complete the readings and the quizzes/writings weekly. They will begin these after the Labor Day holiday.
As this is an online tool, students may access and complete readings from any computer or tablet with internet access.
This program starts student with an equal reading level averaged for their grade level. As they read and quiz, the articles change in difficulty based on the evaluation of those reading and scores. It will adjust to ensure that the students are receiving material that will best fit their abilities and that will help them improve.
This tool has been added to the curriculum and is able to be used in any middle school class the students take. However, due to time allowance, it is possible the students will be assigned readings that fit with social studies, math, or science projects in their reading classes instead of in their separate classes.
Students will have weekly spelling lessons and tests. The spelling lessons have been provided to the students and they are able to work ahead if they wish.
The weekly list assignment is due on Wednesday of the week it is assigned, and they will test on Fridays.
Students will also complete writing prompts and are required to have five prompts completed every two weeks.
Papers will be assigned one per quarter. Students will be required to cite sources using MLA format. They will complete their papers in GoogleDocs. They will be able to access this from any computer/tablet/mobile device that has internet. When the papers are assigned, the students will receive a schedule for due dates.
Students have begun writing their autobiographies! As the holidays hit, the students will focus on family interviews in order to complete chapter three of their autobiography.
